A pedestrian trail, with a taste of wilderness!

The Quebec National Trail was initiated in 1990 by the Quebec Hiking Federation, through the efforts of enthusiastic volunteers. The project aims at the completion of a link connecting Ontario and New Brunswick trails. The Quebec endeavour is made in collaboration with another great enterprise, Hike Canada en Marche, which will cross the entire country!

Today, the Quebec National Trail includes more than 700 km of nature trails. And it's growing each year with new openings!

Two main projects are now on the way to be achieved in Canada:

1. The TRANS CANADA TRAIL, which is a multi-user trail, dedicated to bicycles, horses and snowmobiles as well as hikers. It is opened for the general public, for leisure purposes. It is designed not just for pedestrians, and will pass on old railroad paths, for example.

2. The SENTIER NATIONAL TRAIL, a pedestrian-only trail, is designed for hikers, often in remote areas in the mountainside and in the deep forest. Through-hikers can cross the entire length by camping or resting at the huts along the way. Some sections may be shared with the Trans Canada Trail, in those areas where there is no problem for the hikers (such as low-visitation areas).

The two projects are seen as complementary to each other. In the Quebec region, for example, there is a close association between them, in the form of a single organization dedicated to the promotion and the achievement of a green corridor, which will be multibranched. Sections will be reserved for the walkers, others, in less frequented areas, will be opened to both cyclists and walkers. Moreover, there are already sections opened in the Parc Jacques-Cartier, a provincial park, that are for pedestrians only.

Hiking contributes to the economy!

The economic spinoffs from the project are many. The work is done by volunteers, tied to their community and their ideals, and the partnerships with local authorities reinforce the impact of sport and physical well-being in the population.

The partners are:

All these partners help the National Trail, either by furnishing manpower or money, or by maintaining it on certain portions.

Many enterprises and individuals, as well as organisations, have made donations to the Trail. A special program for more funds has been initiated: people or organizations will adopt a certain number of kilometres of trail, and will receive a sponsoring certificate.

Laurentians, where the mountains are at their best in Quebec, specially in the mont Tremblant area.

Lanaudiere, with its many trails offering a rich experience of the Laurentians and a refuge operated by the Federation.

Mauricie, among the many lakes and mountains of the area.

Quebec, a wild trail along the Jacques-Cartier River, with a future connection to Quebec City.

Charlevoix, along the capes looking over the Saint Lawrence River, with many refuges and facilities.

Manicouagan, a path along the Saint Lawrence, with the sight of whales and wild islands.
